The Luxury Watch Market in Dubai: Brands, Buyers and the Pre-Owned Market

Dubai's appeal as a watch-buying destination goes beyond having the right brands in the right malls. At Bramleys, we see the market shaped by four things working together: a huge international visitor base, affluent residents and collectors, a mature luxury-retail scene, and a pre-owned market that's grown up fast.

A tourist wants a memento. A collector wants one specific reference. A resident is weighing new against pre-owned. All three are shopping in the same city, often on the same street.

Why Dubai Has Become an Important Watch Market

Dubai welcomed 19.59 million international overnight visitors in 2025, up from 18.72 million in 2024. Dubai Watch Week's 2025 edition brought together more than 90 participating brands, and the government has described it as a platform strengthening the city's position in the watchmaking industry. Put those two things together and Dubai isn't just a place where expensive watches get sold — it's a meeting point for brands, collectors, residents, tourists and the secondary market all at once.

An international customer base. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Omega and Breitling are recognised almost everywhere, which suits a city where residents and visitors come from dozens of countries. Some buyers arrive already knowing the exact watch they want; others decide after walking through the city's retail environment. Tourists also have a practical reason to pay attention to the details — eligible purchases can qualify for a VAT refund on leaving the UAE, with a minimum spend of AED 250 per transaction under the Federal Tax Authority's scheme, provided the purchase is validated at departure.

A deep retail infrastructure. Authorised boutiques, specialist resellers and everything in between operate side by side. A buyer after a current-production model typically starts with an authorised retailer. Someone after a discontinued reference, a specific dial colour, or a watch they can walk out the door with today is more likely to end up in the pre-owned market instead.

A genuine industry presence. Dubai Watch Week isn't just a retail event — it's brands, collectors and industry figures meeting in one place. That reinforces something retail alone doesn't: Dubai's relationship with watches runs deeper than shopping.

Who Buys Luxury Watches in Dubai

  • Residents.Buying for ownership, collecting, milestones or simple interest in horology — and, because they're local, building an ongoing relationship with a retailer rather than making a one-off purchase.
  • Collectors.Usually after something specific: a particular reference, production year, dial variant or discontinued model. This is where specialist knowledge and secondary-market access matter most.
  • Tourists and business visitors. The group that makes Dubai's market distinctive — often deciding to buy after arriving, not before.
From our showroom: we sit inside the InterContinental Dubai Marina, which hosts conferences year-round, and it's common to see delegates who weren't planning to buy a watch at all — they discovered us during their stay. Sometimes it's a memento of the trip, sometimes a gift to bring home. Either way, the purchase starts with the hotel stay, not a search for a watch shop.

Why the Pre-Owned Market Matters

Pre-owned isn't simply "new, but cheaper." It's access to a different slice of the market altogether. Brands retire references constantly, but demand for those older pieces doesn't disappear with them — the pre-owned market is how they keep changing hands. A Rolex Daytona 116500LN or an early GMT-Master II "Batgirl," for instance, can be more sought-after secondhand than some pieces still in current production, simply because of the reference and the year.

Much of that supply is international. Watches sourced from established markets like the UK regularly feed into Dubai's pre-owned collections, which is part of why the choice here can be so much broader than what's sitting on a boutique floor.

That also opens up choice in a way new retail can't. A collector deciding between Rolex references can compare several years and dial variants side by side — something no boutique floor allows, since only current production is on display.

The brand on the dial is only the starting point.

Within any single reference, no two watches are quite the same purchase. Condition, originality, service history, box and papers, and current demand all move the value of one example of, say, a Datejust 41 against another.

The Brands That Matter Most in Dubai

Rolex has the broadest recognition of any brand we sell, from first-time luxury buyers to serious collectors. Models like the Submariner, Daytona, GMT-Master II and Datejust each pull in a different type of buyer, and pre-owned is where Rolex gets genuinely interesting — a two-tone Datejust 41 in mint green or a GMT-Master II "Pepsi" from a couple of years back simply isn't sitting on an authorised retailer's shelf. The real question for most Rolex buyers isn't which model, but which reference, dial and year — and whether to buy new or pre-owned at all.

Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet sit in a different part of the market again, driven by collectors chasing complications, specific references and the Royal Oak family in AP's case. For both, the secondary market often isn't optional — many references collectors want simply aren't available on demand through authorised retail.

Cartier, Omega and Breitling broaden things out. Cartier brings design heritage and works well across men's and women's watches; Omega has range and long-standing name recognition; Breitling carries a strong sport-and-aviation identity. Not every buyer is chasing rarity — plenty want a watch that's simply well-made, well-known and well-priced, and these three brands cover that ground.

New vs Pre-Owned: The Real Trade-Offs

  • Availability. New: current production only, subject to retailer stock. Pre-owned: current, discontinued and older references.
  • Selection. New: limited to this year's collection. Pre-owned: spans multiple production years and configurations.
  • Condition. New: factory-new. Pre-owned: varies watch to watch, assessed individually.
  • Documentation. New: manufacturer paperwork and warranty. Pre-owned: depends on the individual piece and retailer.
  • Pricing. New: set by the manufacturer or authorised retailer. Pre-owned: shaped by reference, condition, demand and availability.
  • Buying experience. New: boutique environment. Pre-owned: specialist assessment and side-by-side comparison.

There's also a middle ground worth knowing about: unworn watches sold through the secondary market. These are effectively new but bought outside the authorised-retail queue — useful for buyers who want a current reference without the wait.

What to Check Before Buying Pre-Owned

  • Authentication. Ask how the retailer verifies genuine watches; don't rely on photos or a brand name alone.
  • Condition. Case, bracelet, dial and movement condition, and any signs of polishing, all affect value.
  • Documentation and provenance. Understand exactly what the box and papers establish, and whether service history is available.
  • Product expertise. A good specialist can explain the difference between two references that look identical to an untrained eye.
  • Physical inspection. For a high-value purchase, seeing the watch in person still matters more than any photograph.

What Actually Drives Price

There's no single "Dubai price" for a Rolex or a Patek Philippe. Value comes down to the individual watch — and two pieces with the same name on the dial can be priced very differently once you factor in:

  • Brand and model — different collections attract different levels of demand.
  • Reference — production period and configuration can change value substantially.
  • Condition — wear, polishing, bracelet and dial condition all count.
  • Originality — original components matter most on older or highly sought-after watches.
  • Provenance and documentation — box, papers and service history build buyer confidence.
  • Rarity and current demand — discontinued models and unusual configurations can move quickly.

That's exactly why comparing the asking price on one specific watch matters more than comparing brands in the abstract.

Why a Specialist Retailer Is Worth Using

As the pre-owned market has matured, specialist retailers have carved out a role between individual sellers, online marketplaces and authorised retail — sourcing watches, authenticating them, assessing condition, pricing fairly, and giving buyers somewhere to physically compare pieces before they commit.

At Bramleys, that's exactly what we do from our showroom at the InterContinental Dubai Marina. Every watch we sell — Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Omega, Panerai, Richard Mille, Hublot, Breitling and others — is authenticated and condition-checked before it goes on display.

The Bigger Picture

Dubai's luxury-watch market works because several things are happening in the same city at once: a constant flow of international visitors, an established resident and collector base, serious retail infrastructure, a pre-owned market that keeps expanding what's actually available, and an industry calendar — Dubai Watch Week chief among it — that keeps the city relevant globally.

For some buyers, a watch bought here becomes a lasting reminder of the trip. For others, it's a gift, or the final piece in a long-running collection, or a reference they've been hunting for years. Either way, the individual watch — its reference, condition and history — matters more than the city it was bought in.
